A clothes dryer outlet is a special type of electrical receptacle which is capable of providing enough power to satisfy the requirements of your dryer. For an electric dryer to work, it needs to be connected to an outlet supplying both a 220V and 110V sources. The 220V circuit is used to supply the heating element and the 110V circuit used for the motor to rotate the drum and operate the controls.
This outlet is designed to provide the dryer with both a 240V and 110V electricity supply. Dryers require the 240V supply to heat up, while the 110V supply is used to provide electricity to control the timers in the dryer. Over time outlets can become damaged or simply stop working for a number of reasons.
The dryer should be on a separate 208V/240V electrical outlet. An electric dryer may run with a partial voltage of 110 volts, but it will not heat unless it has 208/240V, 30 amps. The circuit breaker could have partially tripped, even if it does not look as though it has. Turn off the breaker to the dryer and turn it back on to restore full power.
Aug 23, 2011 Electric dryers have one electrical connection to a 240 volt outlet, the outlet can be either a 3-prong or 4-prong, both are usually 30amp which is the standard for dryers. Some older Electric dryers may be “hard-wired” directly to a junction box (typically not up to current electric codes).

Oct 15, 2010 Well,I was looking at a setup today for a washer and a gas dryer- one 20 amp circuit on a duplex gfi receptacle outlet. The washer nameplate was 12 amps and the dryer nameplate says 6.2 amps @ 120 volts.

Feb 11, 2019 With this said, the NEC doesn’t say that a “washing machine” needs to to be on a GFCI, BUT IT DOES SAY THAT THE LAUNDRY AREA MUST HAVE THEM INSTALLED. So in this case, yes, the washing machine would need to be on a GFCI receptacle if in a “laundry area”, which I assume that it would be. So, Does My Washing Machine Need a GFCI Outlet?
Mar 30, 2020 I already have a breaker box for my camper so I guess I can just run the #10 from a 30 amp breaker from the main breaker box that the electric company will hook to to my camper breaker. Then I want to run the wire from the main box to my storage shed and put the dryer outlet in it. I will also need a 110 for a washer.

Then from the sub-panel you could run another 10/3 cable to the dryer outlet, and a 14/2 cable to the new washer outlet. You would then feed the dryer outlet with a 30A 2-pole breaker, and the washer with a 15A, 1-pole breaker from the sub-panel.
Washing machines feature a regular three-prong plug, while dryers may be equipped with any of several types. Dryer plugs have three or four prongs; some run parallel to each other, while others are angled. If the plug doesn't match the outlet, you need to swap out the outlet facing with the appropriate type.
Nearly all homes built before the mid 1990s featured either a 3-prong outlet or range outlet. Though existing homes may still use 3-prong outlets, in 1996 when the National Electrical Code (NEC) was updated to require 4-prong dryer outlets in all new homes.

Long term, I do agree with Rt002k. Short term, you'll have no problem with the dryer outlet, but you'll probably get tired of either plugging/unplugging or resetting the circuit breaker when you accidentally run both the dryer and charger at the same time. Getting a second outlet or an HPWC installed is the best solution in that case.
Your dryer should be equipped with a 3-prong grounded plug that fits into a matching grounded outlet. If it has a serious electrical fault, the grounding prong is supposed to carry the stray electricity directly to the neutral wire, creating a short circuit that trips the circuit breaker to cut off power to the machine.

Rick. Rick: Please be more specific. Is the 240 volt dryer supplied by a cord and plug connection, or is it wired directly, and if so with what type of wiring methods?
